The Aaronic Blessing

Renewal Fellowship
breaking empty traditions and renewing the faith

Numbers 6:22-27 NKJV
And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: (23) “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, 'This is the way you shall bless the children of Israel. Say to them: (24) "The LORD bless you and keep you; (25) The LORD make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; (26) The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace." ‘(27) “So they shall put My name on the children of Israel, and I will bless them."

Deuteronomy 21:5 NKJV Then the priests, the sons of Levi, shall come near, for the LORD your God has chosen them to minister to Him and to bless in the name of the LORD; by their word every controversy and every assault shall be settled.

INTRODUCTION
This text is one that most Christians are, or should be, familiar with; it’s known as the Aaronic Blessing. You may have heard this blessing many times at the close of church services, but have you ever taken the time to ponder this blessing in order to really understand the fullness of what is being said?

As we look closely at this blessing, let’s keep in mind that God instructed the priests to invoke this blessing upon His children and in doing so they were actually putting God’s name upon the people.

THE KEY WORDS AND THEIR HEBREW MEANINGS
Let’s examine this blessing closer and see the richness of God’s goodness towards us.

LORD
YHVH self Existent or eternal; Jehovah. He who needs nothing or no one to exist.

Bless - baw-rak'
A primitive root; to kneel; by implication to bless God (as an act of adoration), and (vice-versa) man (as a benefit); also (by euphemism) to curse (God or the king, as treason): - X abundantly, X altogether, X at all, blaspheme, bless, congratulate, curse, X greatly, X indeed, kneel (down), praise, salute, X still, thank.

In Genesis 24:11 we read, "And he made the camels kneel down outside the city." The phrase "kneel down" is the Hebrew verb ברך (barak). This same word is used to mean to kneel down to present a gift as one would do to show respect to another.

In the book of Ephesians bible study Paul gives us a list of blessings that God has given His children. It would be beneficial to read this short book and familiarize yourself with the things God has presented to you as gifts or blessings.

Keep - shâmar
Properly to hedge about (as with thorns), that is, guard; generally to protect, attend to, etc. This has the implication of a Sheppard that would construct a hedge of thorns around his sheep at night to keep them safe from predators.

Face - pânîym - paw-neem'
This Hebrew word can mean the face but also the "presence" or the "wholeness of being" of an individual; as with the ‘Showbread’, or the bread of presence.

Gracious - chânan - khaw-nan'
properly to bend or stoop in kindness to an inferior; to favor, bestow; causatively to implore (that is, move to favor by petition): - beseech, X fair, (be, find, show) favor (-able), be (deal, give, grant (gracious (-ly), intreat, (be) merciful, have (show) mercy (on, upon), have pity upon, pray, make supplication, X very.

Peace - shâlôm
shâlôm From H7999; safe, that is, (figuratively) well, happy, friendly; also (abstractly) welfare, that is, health, prosperity, peace: - X do, familiar, X fare, favor, + friend, X greet, (good) health, (X perfect, such as be at) peace (-able, -ably), prosper (-ity, -ous), rest, safe (-ly), salute, welfare, (X all is, be) well, X wholly.

John 14:27
(27) Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

The Peace of Jesus has been given to us. Remember that His peace is wholeness which includes: safety, wellness, happiness, health and prosperity.

LET’S PUT IT ALL TOGETHER…

Jehovah will bless you and guard you with a hedge of protection. Jehovah will make His presence shine upon you and will bestow favor and mercy unto you. Jehovah will lift up His presence upon you setting in place all you need to be whole and complete.
